Tioman Island or Pulau Island is the biggest Island situated off the eastern coast of Malaysia. It is one of the most frequented islands of this area and offers much to the tourists who are looking for a relaxing getaway by the beach.

There are many ways to travel to this Island e.g. by coach, flight and private car/taxi. Most of these routes take us to two destinations is Malaysia, Mersing and Tanjung Gemuk. Both Mersing and Tanjung Gemuk are a ferry away from Tioman. Unless you take a flight directly from Subang Airport, you will have to travel to Tioman by Ferry.

Bus travel to Mersing-

The various Bus/ Coach services from Singapore to Mersing are-

4. Transnasional

Pick up point -The Plaza at Beach Road
Arrival at- Mersing Bus Terminal
Time – 9:00am, 7:00pm and 10:00pm

5. Starmart Express

Pick up point -Golden Mile complex
Arrival at- Mersing Jetty
Time – 6:30 am

All of these buses take around 4 hours to reach Mersing. The fare of most of these is close to SGD35.

Mersing to Pulau Tioman

The onwards journey from Singapore is by ferry. The most popular and affordable way to travel to Tioman Island from here is Bluewater hi-speed ferry. The fare is around RM 35 single journey. The sailing time is mostly around 1.5 hours.


How to get to Tioman Island from Singapore

Tioman Island (Pulau Tioman) is a small island (one of the 64) in the South China Sea, situated on the southeastern side of Peninsular Malaysia. There is not one but many ways to travel from Singapore to Tioman. The route that you pick depends on your wishes primarily then the budget you have set aside for this trip and also the amount of time you have in hand.

Here are a few ways to make this journey-

1. Flight from Singapore

Surprisingly this small island has its own airport very close to the Tekek Village. The airport is not fully functional as it one used to be but is good for small airlines. The airport’s runway is small and unidirectional which does not support the landing to any large commercial airlines. This is one of the reasons that no direct flights operate from Singapore Changi Airport or Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

The only way to fly from Singapore to Tioman is via Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport). The flight from Singapore to Subang is 1 hour 20 minutes while from Subang to Tioman is under an hour. This is definitely the quickest way to travel to Tioman but finding proper flights is quite an issue.

2. Private Car from Singapore

This is probably the most hassle free way to travel to Tioman. The car will pick you up from wherever in Singapore and drop you to your location in either Mersing or Tanjung Gemuk. The onwards journey is via Ferry. The most frequented private car service is MPV taxi and Van. The price for a one-way journey in a 7-Seater Van is SGD100. 3. Coach from Singapore

Services like WTS Travel & Tours and The One Travel & Tours take you from Singapore to Mersing or Tanjung Gemuk.

a. Mersing– (Distance from Singapore 258.0 km.)

The journey can take from 3.5 to 5 hours. The fare could range from SGD 30.00 to 35.00 depending on the bus service. The bus services from Singapore to Mersing are WTS, KKKL, etc.

b. Tanjung Gemuk– (Distance from Singapore 297.3 km.)

The journey can take 4 to 5.5 hours. The fare could range from SGD 30.00 to 36.50. The bus services from Singapore to Tanjung Gemuk are One Travel, KKKL, and WTS.

The onwards journey from these two destinations is via ferry.

4. Bus from Singapore

Most commonly there are these two bus services that take you from Singapore to Mersing, Starmart Express and Transnasional. Their average prices range within SGD35.

They both depart early in the morning and the journey takes up to 4 hours.

To board the Starmart Express you have to reach either Golden Mile Tower or Boon Lay whereas for Transnasional service you have board the bus from The Plaza at Beach Road.

5.Ferry from Singapore to Tioman Island

When travelling from Singapore to Tioman Island, one thing to be kept in mind is that there is no direct Ferry from Singapore to the island. The most convenient way to travel is to take a bus or coach from Singapore to either of these 2 destinations-

Mersing to Pulau Tioman

The onwards journey from Singapore is by ferry. The most popular and affordable way to travel to Tioman Island from here is Bluewater hi-speed ferry. The fare is around RM 35 single journey. The sailing time is mostly around 1.5 hours.

Tanjung Gemuk to Pulau Tioman

The Bluewater express is the ferry of choice although there are also a few private boats and Cataferry. The fare is similar to one from Mersing. The journey is also 1.5 hours but can vary with tidal condition.
